The plaza of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is quiet right now but within less than 24 hours, the historic center of town will be hustling and bustling with the sights and sounds of Native art, music, fashion, and more at the annual Santa Fe Indian Market.

Market workers from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, Inc., were busy on Thursday evening setting up a stage which will play host to musical performances and a contemporary and traditional fashion show.

But the main draw of the wekend event are the artists. Representing tribes from all throughout Indian Country, more than 1,200 artists will be on hand to explain, educate, and promote their unique cultural expressions.

The largest Indian arts market in the world is always a major event in New Mexico , bringing in tourists from Germany, Japan, and beyond. In total, almost 100,000 visitors are expected to descend upon the City Different in just one single weekend.

Besides the artists, business in Santa Fe also experience a boon. Restaraunts and lodging in particular will reap many of the benefits.

But if a visitor hasn't planned ahead, he or she may already be left out of the fun. The Camel Rock Suites, owned by the Pueblo of Tesuque, has had to turn away desperate visitors in search of a room.

Outside the market, the Alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts will be celebrating and honoring one another in a fashion extravaganza on Friday night. The school is responsible for developing an enormous amount of Indian talent today and the show will no doubt inspire yet another generation of Indian artists.

Join Indianz.Com on Friday, August 18, at the Paolo Soleri Ampitheatre as the Alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts presents "Culture Embodied II," featuring artists and designers from the school. Musical performance by The Mud Ponies and others. Tickets available at Ticketmaster.
