'Fighting Sioux' arena to open

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2001

The $100 million "Fighting Sioux" hockey arena at the University of North Dakota is scheduled to open within the coming week.

The arena has drawn controversy because its benefactor, wealthy alumnus Ralph Engelstad, threatened to let it rot uncompleted if the school dropped its "Fighting Sioux" nickname. Trumping a pending decision by university president Charles Kupchella, the North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted last December to keep the name.

The vote came just a day after Engelstad made the threat to Kuphcella in a fax.

A mascot conference slated to feature Winona LaDuke is occuring at the school this week.
