WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2001 After saying he doubted human bone fragments a dog recently found at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus were Indian, Chancellor Harvey Perlman says the school will concede they are Native and won't seek DNA testing on them. DNA tests could damage the remains and wouldn't be fair to Indians and tribal leaders, said Perlman in a letter to the Nebraska State Historical Society. Perlman also said non-Indian bones were also incinerated and discarded by the school in the 1960s. Ralph Thomas, a Santee Sioux activist who has been tracking down the remains, told The Daily Nebraskan he does not believe Perlman's latest story. But he said an Indian memorial the school dedicated this month should reflect that non-Indians were also burned and thrown away by the school. Get the Story:
