Woman keeping Mohegan name alive

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2001 When sisters Gladys and Ruth Tantaquidgeon die, their Mohegan last name would have gone along with them. But their niece has decided to keep the name alive. Melissa Jayne Fawcett is historian for the Connecticut tribe and niece to Gladys and Ruth. When she realized the name would go away, she filed the necessary paperwork and changer her name to Melissa Jayne Fawcett Tantaquidgeon. The name means "going along fast on land or in the water" in Mohegan, an Algonquin language. Get the Story:
