University wants Indian items back

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2001 Call it reverse repatriation but a Canadian university wants items taken from the Pauingassi First Nation 30 years ago given back. Anthropologists at the University of Winnipeg say an Indian group in Wisconsin has no right to keep the six sacred items. But a judge helpd transfer the two drums, two scrolls, a drumstick and a piece of cloth to the Three Fires Mediwinwin Society. The society is run by a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Band. The society will go to the Pauingassi First Nation and see if the items are ready to be returned, said a member. Get the Story:
