OCTOBER 20, 2000

Dr. Tommy Lewis Jr., a Navajo man who ran the Dine College on the Navajo Nation, is the first Indian president of Northwest Indian College on the Lummi Reservation in Washington.

Lewis was inaugurated into his new position on Thursday. Even before he took over officially, he welcomed Secretary of Commerce Norman Mineta to Washington on Wednesday and accepted computer equipment on behalf of 24 tribal colleges.

Lewis attributes his leadership skills and his committment to education to his traditional Navajo upbringing.
