THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2001

Faced with criticism for his school's use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo, University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella said he found Wednesday night's speech at a mascot conference by Winona LaDuke "interesting."

When LaDuke said the school should stand up for Sioux people, Kupchella told The Grand Forks Herald the university is trying to accomplish the goal. Kupchella also said it was "interesting" LaDuke spent time discussing environmental issues, because she said she wasn't an expert on mascots.

After her speech, LaDuke told the paper she hasn't seen the arena but that the "Fighting Sioux" logo is prominently displayed. According to the Associated Press, there are 4,500 logos in and on the building.
