DECEMBER 19, 2000

A 3,000-year-old corn cob, stone darts, jewelry, hemp sandals, and brooms are among just some of the artifacts recently unearthed in a cave in northern New Mexico.

The cave was actually first found by highway workers in 1951. But only recently have state archaeologists been able to exacavate the site.

The dry conditions of the cave helped preserve its contents. But pot hunters had come upon it and the cave was beginning to deteriorate, so state archaeologists moved to preserve it.
