JANUARY 31, 2001

Opening arguments on the constitutionality of an English-only law began on Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The law was approved by voters last November and requires all official state business to be conducted in English. It allows some exceptions in some areas such as tourism.

Residents of San Juan County, located within the Navajo Nation, overwhelmingly voted against the law. County Commissioner Mark Maryboy, one of the several officials who have challenged the law, says it will prevent him from addressing the needs of Navajo-speaking residents there.
