FEBRUARY 13, 2001

A civil rights complaint alleging a hostile learning environment to Native American students has been filed against the University of North Dakota at the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.

The school is at the center of controversy for its "Fighting Sioux" nickname. The name is considered offensive by most Native American students and tribes in the state but most other students support it.
