Bush proposes education increase

FEBRUARY 22, 2001 President George W. Bush on Wednesday proposed a 11 percent increase in next year's budget for the Department of Education. Bush wants funding increased from $44.5 billion from $39.9 billion. It comes as he is proposing a $1.6 trillion tax cut and is seeking cuts at other federal agencies. But the increase is much smaller than the one Democrats have proposed. Bush yesterday did not address his $900 million tribal school funding proposal. Funding for repair and construction of tribal schools falls under the Department of Interior. Get the Story:
