Tribe protests 'Fighting Sioux' charges

Charles Murphy, chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North Dakota, on Monday asked University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella to drop charges against a tribal member who participated in a protest against the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname.

But Kupchella doesn't have the authority to drop charges against Wastewin Young, arrested for blocking traffic during an October 2000 protest, said the state.
