MARCH 15, 2001

The Watertown High School in South Dakota is debating its "Ki Yi Legend," a tale about two fictionalized Indian tribes which supporters say brings the school pride.

The legend was made up years ago and the school has been using it as part of a homecoming celebration. It used to include simulated scalpings and the school's logo once contained an image of an Indian.

But Betty Ann Gross, volunteer director of the Minority Resource Center in Watertown, on Wednesday told school officials the legend has to rid itself of its remaining Indian associations. The school will seek the opinions of some of it 29 Indian student as part of its evaluation of the legend.
