Indian sites being desecrated
APRIL 16, 2001

About 400 Indian sites and burial grounds outside the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona have been desecrated by grave robbers seeking pottery that can fetch upwards of $20,000 on the black market.

The looters leave behind signs of their robbery: cigarette butts, beer cans. They also leave body parts of American Indians exposed to the elements.

According to an official with the Arizona State Museum, entire Indian sites are being bulldozed in the region, traditional home to the Hopi and Zuni tribes.
