Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns defended his veto of a bill that would have provided an additional $1 million in state aid to two Nebraska reservation schools. Citing truancy problems, Johanns said aid to Indian schools should coincide with efforts to improve attendance rates. Public school officials at the Omaha Nation and the Winnebago Tribe plan to meet to discuss Johanns' veto.

Johanns had pledged more support to Indian schools after the Omaha World Herald documented various problems in their special series Broken Promise: The Failure of Indian Education.
