APRIL 18, 2001 An activist in South Dakota is skeptical of a statement made by the US Commission on Civil Rights condemning the use of Indians as mascots at non-Indian schools. Betty Ann Gross of the Minority Resource Center was worried the policy statement would undermine local efforts to persuade schools to get rid of Indian mascots. Gross had arranged meetings with local school leaders to talk about the issue. Commission member Elsie Meeks said the statement is not meant to supersede efforts such as Gross'. Meeks said it was only meant to support years of battled fought by activists like Gross to get rid of mascots. Get the Story:
