APRIL 2, 2001

The Mohegan Tribe and Nation of Connecticut on Sunday held a grand opening for Turtle Island Long House Native American Cultural Center in Norwich.

The center features various Indian crafts and will host clinics, workshops, and seminars.

The Mohegan Tribe and Nation is not federally or state recognized, but claims to be the rightful descendants of the historic Mohegan Tribe and is suing the federally recognized tribe to recover gaming proceeds from the financially successful Mohegan Sun casino. The group also recently fended off a court challenge from the federally recognized Mohegans, who tried to prevent others from using the name "Mohegan" to describe themselves.
