A 25-member Indian education advisory committee was named Monday by the Nebraska State Department of Education. Members of the committee include Indian educators and leaders from throughout the state. The commission will develop a comprehensive statewide policy to address the needs of Indian children both on and off the reservation.

Documentation of the failures in Indian education came in the form of a special series by the Omaha World Herald earlier this year. The series prompted state officials to take action.

Goverenor Mike Johanns took action in his own way, vetoing a bill last week that would have provided an additional $1 million in funding to Omaha Nation and Winnebago public schools.

In response, both school boards passed resolutions to go forth with a lawsuit against the state. Litigation plans are expected to be finalized next week.
