MAY 14, 2001 Navajo student Irvin Harrison gave the commencement address at the University of New Mexico this past Saturday, telling his 2,500 fellow graduates to get involved and face life's challenges. Harrison is one of 119 American Indian and Alaska Native students who received degrees this year. He overcame some challenges of his own -- having come to UNM to work as a clerk but pushing through to emerge as an honors student. Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday received honorary degrees.
