Federal and California officials are trying to come up with a way to prevent Painted Rock in the Carrizo Plain National Monument from being defaced by vandals.

Painted Rock is home to rock art and archaeological remains. But vandals are defacing the site, considered sacred to the Chumash.

Located about 100 miles from Los Angeles, Carrizo Plain was declared a national monument by President Clinton in January. It is one which Secretary of Interior Gale Norton is reviewing to see if locals have any concerns they want addressed.
