Increased funding cited for tribal colleges

MAY 23, 2001 Leaders of the nation's tribal colleges on Tuesday called for Congress to provide more funding to the 33 universities which uniquely serve Indian Country. The leaders want the Bush administration to spend $4,500 per tribal college student. Currently, the per student spending is $3,849. They also tribal college grants to be increased from $37 milion to $43.4 million. The proposed fiscal year 2002 budget for education focuses primarily on construction and repair of K-12 institutions. The move coincided with a report released by the American Indian Higher Education Consortium and the Institute for Higher Education Policy yesterday on tribal colleges. Get the Story:
