JUNE 14, 2001

Fluent speakers of tribal languages in Montana are so low that tribal leaders and educators are worried about losing them.

According to the Little Big Horn College on the Crow Reservation, less than 25 percent of young Crow speak the Apsaalooke language. Only 12 fluent speakers of the Gros Ventre language live on the Fort Belknap Reservation while only five Kootenai speakers were located on the Flathead Reservation, according to research by educators.

Montana's seven tribal colleges are working together to preserve their languages. They formed the Learning Lodge Institute with a a four-year, $850,000 grant that will end this October but more money is being sought.
