Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) was one of many who participated in ceremonies commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana on Monday -- a day which showed that there are still battles Indian people face.

Campbell pushed to rename the monument in 1991 when Congress dropped "Custer" from the name. But there is still no funding for a memorial honoring the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors who fought at the battle -- a situation Campbell hopes to correct.

A group of people held an impromptu protest at the battle site yesterday march calling for funding for the memorial.

A member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, Campbell recalled an incident in which police searched and took down license plate numbers of tribal members who went to battle site 25 years ago. Since then, changes have been made in how the National Park Services views Indian history and works with tribes.

A special ceremony today will be held to commemorate Long Road, a Sioux warrior. The Bighorn National Park is placing a marker where he died as part of a greater effort to make sure Indian involvement in the battle is remembered.

Attending yesterday's remembrance was Minnie Grace Mechling Carey, the 94-year-old daughter of a survivor of the battle. Her father was a blacksmith in the 7th Calvary.
