Crow college put on probation

JUNE 27, 2001

The Little Big Horn College on the Crow Reservation in Montana has been put on probation for a year following the firing of former President Janine Pease Pretty On Top this past January.

The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges’ Commission on Colleges met this month to discuss -- among other issues -- the firing and how it affected the college. The commission could have revoked accreditation but instead chose probation, provided the college stays free of the tribal politics which seemed to characterize Pretty on Top's firing.

Accreditation allows students to transfer credits to other institutions. Tribal colleges typically serve as springboards to four-year colleges.
