JUNE 5, 2000

Four high schools in the Northwest offer Native language classes to students, in hopes of keeping the languages alive. The Port Angeles High School in Washington offers Klallam, the Neah Bay High School in Washington offers Makah, the Ferndale High School in Washington offers Lummi, and the Lapwai High School in Idaho offers Nez Perce.

Funding from the Adminstration for Native Americans helped teachers develop the Klallam class. Legislation in Washington allows students to take Native language classes to fulfill their language requirements.
