JUNE 7, 2001

The Sinte Gleska University in South Dakota has fired its longtime President Lionel Bordeaux, a nationally recognized leader in Indian education.

Board Chairman John Spotted Tail said the board voted 6-2 to fire Bordeaux for lack of accountability. Spotted Tail said Bordeaux didn't attend board meetings, report to the board, or provide audits.

The school is located on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.

The firing of Bordeaux is the second this year at a tribal college. The Little Big Horn College on the Crow Reservation in Montana ousted President Janine Pease Pretty on Top in January.
