WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001

American Indian educators and activists on Tuesday told the Kansas State Board of Education that Indian mascots at public schools should be eliminated.

The effort was led by Kansas State University Native American Student Body. The board took no action on the request but a member said a committee will be set up to study the issue.

In the state, 33 teams have Indian-themed mascots or logos.
