TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2001 Nobility in Mayan society used writing as a means of keeping a hold on their subjects, says an Ohio State University archaeologist. That power extended even to the scribes who were responsible for documenting the histories of their leaders. A scribe of a conquered leader was likely to be killed for his duties, says Dr. Kevin J. Johnston in the June issue of Antiquity. Get the Story:
