AUGUST 7, 2000 Reservation schools in Arizona are in great need of teachers, especially in math, language and special education. The schools face extra challenges due to primarily rural locations. Nationwide, there is a shortage of teachers. A new program at Northern Arizona University will pay for pay for the tuition, housing, and books for Hopi students in education. The US Department of Education awarded the school a $600,000 grant. In Nebraska, 16 Native students are earning degrees in elementary education as part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Teachers College program on the Omaha Reservation. The program works with the Omaha Nation school in Macy and the Walthill school in Walthill. Get the Story:
