Yup'ik school gets co-principal

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 The Ayaprun Elitnaurvik School, a Yu'pik language immersion school in Bethel, Alaska, now has two principals. Principal Chris Meier is being joined by co-principal Agatha Panigkaq Shields. Meier, an English speaker, will focus on administration issues while Shields, a Yup'ik speaker, will handle the school's language efforts. The school was started in 1985. Its 188 students are taught exclusively in Yup'ik for the first three years. The following years are taught in a combination of Yup'ik and English. Get the Story:
