Charges against Indian woman dismissed

SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

On Monday, US District Judge Paul Magnuson in Minnesota dismissed a felony charge against an Indian woman who was set to plead guilty to writing several papers for a University of Minnesota basketball player.

Jan Gangelhoff, who appeared in court holding what was reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune to be an eagle feather, had been involved in a scandal with the university's basketball team. She had come to a plea agreement with the Department of Justice for writing several term papers for Bobby Jackson in 1995, allowing him to continue his eligibility to play basketball and receive a federal Pell grant.

But the judge dismissed the count and said it was too broad. The Attorney General's office can proceed with other avenues of prosecuting her, however.

Gangelhoff, a former tutor, received money from former Gophers coach Clem Haskins. Haskins admitted giving $3,000 to Gangelhoff in August.
