The old Phoenix Indian School in Arizona has been transformed from a boarding school to a 75-acre park called the "oasis" in the heart of Phoenix.

The school was started in 1890, drawing children from tribes in Arizona and the Southwest. Its last class of students graduated in 1990.

Unlike other schools, however, the land did not go into tribal hands, although some believe it should have been taken into trust. Instead, the city of Phoenix took it over and consructed the $13.5 million park.

The park, which is set to open on Saturday, includes an outdoor ampitheater, ponds, fountains and a Native American Cultural Center.
