Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, will still be known by the moniker "Warriors" but a portrait of an Indian leader that was on a gym wall has now been replaced with what is being called a more accurate depiction of Chief Hollow Horn Bear.

Local artist Tammy deGruchy painted the update, which depicts Horn Bear and the school's "Warrior" name. According to the school, descendants of the Brule / Sicangu Lakota leader approve of the painting.

Local activist Betty Ann Gross, who has filed civil rights lawsuits against schools in the state for their use of mascots, says the descendants with whom she has spoken disapprove.

The school is spending $15,000 total on art projects by deGruchy.
