Elders are considered an important resource in Alaska, a tradition that extends to the Alaska Pioneers Home, the state-run nursing home.

Located throughout the state, the homes provide elders with care. But they also are sources of information and knowledge for schoolchildren.

Students in Sitka, where one of six homes is located, interviewed resident and compiled their stories into a book called "Exploits and Escapades: Stories Shared by Sitka's Elders."
