TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2002

Activist, author, activist and alleged New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Russell Means called on the elimination of Indian mascots at a gathering in South Dakota on Monday.

Means says removing mascots is a way to "decolonize" Indians from their "oppressors." His comments came at a forum organized by a local activist whose battle against mascots and other Indian-themed symbols has convinced some schools to drop them.
