Opinion: Ending Indian mascots

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2002 "The brouhaha at West Seattle High School can be summed up with a phrase educators love: a teaching moment. The lesson centers on issues of race, cultural sensitivity and our painful history with Native Americans. Students, teachers and the community are wrestling with this thorny question: Should the school, around since 1917, use "Indians" for its symbol and mascot? No way, say students from the school's Native American club. They are being backed by political activists and community leaders. On Saturday, those students, joined by supporters, gave school officials a petition with more than 600 signatures." Get the Story:
