Corps consulting on Haskell highway
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2002

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday to every federally recognized tribe, seeking input on a proposed bypass highway that could run through sacred wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.

The school and environmentalists have opposed a bypass running through the wetlands. Opponents hope the consultation process will show why the area needs to be protected from development.

All tribes are being asked to comment but only 26 in the state are participating in consultation talks with the Corps.
