MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2002

Students, parents and elders packed into the gym of a now-closed school in Kivalina, Alaska, to discuss the problems that led to its shutdown.

The state closed the McQueen School, citing threats to staff. A school official chastised acts of violence committed against teachers' homes and pets.

Parents and students criticized the school for its prison-like atmosphere. Elders criticized parents for not paying enough attention to their kids.

Quote of the meeting was from elder Lucy Adams. "I've been crying inside, ever since the school was closed. It's time to control your children. Don't just holler into your CBs! The parents need to wake up."
