State digs for bones in wetlands

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2002

An archaeologist went digging for graves in wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas, apparently without consulting tribes and affected Indians.

According to Tim Weston of the Kansas State Historical Society, there was no evidence of graves in the Baker Wetlands. An official with the Kansas Department of Transportation said Indian activists won't tell the state where potential sites are.

The wetlands are being examined because the state wants to build a highway running through the area. The school, students, environmentalists and others oppose the project.
