WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002

President Bush on Tuesday signed into law a major reform of the nation's public school systems, one of his key campaign promises.

The bill ties funding to performance of students. Schools whose students don't meet federal standards would risk losing federal money.

The bill also includes several provisions affecting Alaska Native education that were offered by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska.).
