EDITORIAL: Gorton's record a disappointment

OCTOBER 10, 2000

An editorial in today's issue of The Seattle Times says that Senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash) has to answer for his "uneven environmental record."

The paper cites Gorton's record on various issues but says his tactic of inserting riders into other bills is his "notable flaw." As an example, the paper says he inserted a rider into a Kosovo relief bill to allow an open pit, cyanide-leach mine in the state.

In the end, the paper says Gorton's environmental stances are a "disappointment" for many voters.

Today, the League of Conservation Voters plans to place Gorton on its "Dirty Dozen" list. The list targets candidates whom the League feels are ripe for defeat.
