Salmon and economy debated

OCTOBER 13, 2000

The title alone of a panel held at Gonzaga University on Thursday night -- "Saving the Salmon or Saving the Economy" -- drew complaints from Charles Hudson of the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission.

Hudson and others asked why the issue has to be framed in adversarial language. They said breaching of dams on the Snake River is necessary in order to save dwindling runs of salmon.

Hudson also criticized a suggestion from an audience member sho said tribes should be supplied with fish that come from Alaska.
