Good salmon run considered anomaly

Although Indian and non-Indian fishermen alike have appreciated an extremely high run of salmon in the Columbia River Basin this year, the future appears to be bleak.

A drought and California's recent power crisis have put future runs in doubt. A spokesperson for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, representing four treaty-based tribes, said the salmon runs won't be as high in two to three years.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife also says the luck of nature helped this year's run. Rainy winters over the past five years boded well for spawning salmon.

For the four tribes, their cultural survival depends on the fish.
