New mining banned on sacred peaks

OCTOBER 20, 2000

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has banned new mining on the San Francisco Peaks, considered sacred by tribes in Arizona and New Mexico.

A temporary ban had been in effect since 1998. In July, US Forest Officials recommended that the mountain be withdrawn from additional mining under the 1872 Mining Law.

In August, the Department of Interior and a private company negotiated a $1 million settlement to close a pumice mine in the peaks.

The ban will be in effect for the next 20 years.
