Pueblo wants mica mine shut down

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2001 Picuris Pueblo of New Mexico has asked the state Supreme Court to review its attempt to shut down a mica mine on ancestral land. A state appeals court dismissed the case, saying it was filed too late. The 60-day window to challenge a 20-year, 80-acre expansion of the mine after it was approved by the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department passed, said the court last month. The Pueblo contends the land on which the mine is located rightfully belongs to the tribe. But that issue has never been raised in any court. Mica is used by Pueblo potters. Get the Story:
