ANWR: A test in surviving Murkowski

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001 Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) held a press conference about drilling in the the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on Thursday, a regular occurrence that led one environmental group to hand out badges that said "I survived another Murkowski press conference." Guests this time included Secretary of Interior Gale Norton, Sens. Rick Santorum (Pa.), Larry Craig (Idaho) and Craig Thomas (Wyo.). Murkowski called Santorum his "pinch hitter" but by the time the faith-based Senator got to the podium, nobody was paying attention -- all the reporters went chasing after Murkowski when he left. Murkowski, of course, is running for governor of Alaska. Murkowski also brought along Richard Glenn and Tara Sweeney of Arctic Slope Regional Corp., an Alaska Native corporation. Sweeney could barely be heard due to the bustling wind outside the Capitol building. The wind, one hopes, was not carrying anthrax. Get the Story:
