WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2001

Residents in northern New Mexico on Tuesday questioned whether Pojoaque Pueblo is using too much water for its new golf course.

Parties to a water rights lawsuit dating back to the 1950s, they wondered why they should continue negotiating a settlement if the Pueblo is so clearly violating water limits The State Engineer's Office is conducting a study of the tribe's usage to compare it with what it is entitled to.

An attorney for a group of water users says the Pueblo might be able to purchase rights from other tribes. Tesuque, San Ildefonso and Nambé are involved in the Aamodt lawsuit.
