Alaska gas pipeline debated

Three oil companies and Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles debated a natural gas pipeline before the Senate on Tuesday, disagreeing over what route the proposed project would take and how useful it would be.

The pipeline would bring gas in Alaska's North Slope to the market. Exxon Mobil, BP and Phillips have all been favoring a $15 billion pipeline traveling under the Beaufort Sea and into Canada while the state was looking at a $17 billion southern route.

Phillips now says the southern route might be attractive. But all companies say there is no financial incentive for the pipeline due to the volatile and low price of natural gas.
