DECEMBER 15, 2000

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an animal rights group, is suing the state of Washington for allowing the Makah whale hunt to occur.

The group says the state has failed to protect the whales under state regulations. But state and officials note that the federal government is responsible for regulating the hunt, not the state.

The SSCS protested the hunt ever since the tribe resumed the hunt in 1998. Last year, they had a significant presence but this year, they weren't present.
