Pesticide cited as threat to salmon

DECEMBER 7, 2000

A pesticide which will be phased out over the next four years is being blamed for causing harm to salmon in Washington state rivers.

According to local officials, the level of the pesticide diazinon in streams was higher than the Environmental Protection Agency's acceptable limit. A report by the National Marine Fisheries Service also says that certain concentrations of diazinon can impair the senses and health of salmon.

The EPA announced the gradual withdrawal of diazinon from the market by 2003 due to its cited risks for children.
